Cheb is amongthe oldest towns in the Czech Republic. Its history dates back to the 11th century. The following century left a remarkable trace on its face – a Romanesque castle, an imperial palace (the only in the Czech Republic), and the two-floor Chapels of St. Erhard and St. Ursula, the construction of which was initiated by Friedrich Barbarossa.
The residential quarter boasts a colourful square with characteristic ridged roofs, the block of semi-timbered houses called Špalíček, and the Gothic rectory Church of St. Nicholas and Elisabeth. The house Nr.3 (the building of the Cheb museum) is famous as a site of the murder of the emperor’s generalissimos Albrecht of Valdštejn in 1634. The Baroque period brought remarkable religious buildings and a monumental town hall. Cheb has become a lively centre of the Euro region Egrensis.
