The cathedral of St. Vítus, Wenceslas and Adalbert is the most famous sacral monument in Prague and creates its characteristic dominant. Originally there was a pre-Romanesque rotunda, founded by prince Václav (Wenceslas), who was also buried here. Prince Spytihněv had the rotunda demolished in 1060 and built a three-nave basilica, which had been standing here till 1344. Emperor Charles IV initiated the construction of the main kingdom cathedral of the French Gothic style in connection with the promotion of the Prague bishopric into archbishopric.
