Cheb is amongthe oldest towns in the Czech Republic. Its history dates back to the 11th century. The following century left a remarkable trace on its face – a Romanesque castle, an imperial palace (the only in the Czech Republic), and the two-floor Chapels of St. Erhard and St. Ursula, the construction of which was initiated by Friedrich Barbarossa.
The residential quarter boasts a colourful square with characteristic ridged roofs, the block of semi-timbered houses called Špalíček, and the Gothic rectory Church of St. Nicholas and Elisabeth.
